Mystical Shaman Oracle

A Recommended Oracle Card Deck

by Re, founder of Angel Messenger

It has been a very long time since I have recommended an oracle card deck other than the ones we use in our free online angel card readings. However, I have discovered one that deserves recognition. The authors describe the cards as Sacred Symbols, and you’ll recognize them as such as they have been on cave drawings since the dawn of time. As I was a student of psychology and do have some familiarity with Carl Jung’s work, I understood them as archetypes (inherited ideas from our collective unconscious), but I was still shocked when looking through the deck was like recalling long lost memories. It was a surreal and Sacred experience.

I knew that I had Native American heritage but had never really connected with that part of myself before. This deck was like being called Home. The Mystical Shaman Oracle by Alberto Villoldo, Colette Baron-Reid and Marcela Lobos may be one of my favorite oracle card decks of all time, and that is quite a statement for me.

I wouldn’t say that it is the perfect deck for beginners as it only has one word on each card, versus the short explanation the angel cards have. However, the illustrations by Jena DellaGrottaglia are absolutely stunning and can give so much more to the reading. (Side note: I now understand that reading the images of the cards is a Gypsy thing … I thought everyone did that, but I recently read in a book about my people that the Romani are especially Gifted in this way, so I guess that’s why I had a difficult time understanding why others couldn’t see what I saw in the cards. Though I did teach others to do this and very much believe everyone should pay attention to the imagery!) I recommend connecting with the card and the imagery before looking at the description.

Who This Deck is For …

This is a deck for those interested in Shamanism, of course, but … This is also a deck for those interested in reaching a deeper connection with our Earth Mother. This is a deck for those interested in connecting with Native American Ancestors, your own Higher Self – especially if you have Native American history or if you just want to learn. It’s beautiful and worth your time!

Each card has a beautiful image and three important messages:

The Essence is what you should read first. It’s a timely message that expands on the symbol in the card.

The Invitation is what you read if your card is upright. It’s a call to action.

The medicine is what you read if your card is upside down. This is not a bad thing. It just means this area of your life needs some balance – some medicine. <3

Hi thanks for your article about this beautiful deck! I just purchased it and because English is not my native language I found it hard to interpret the following:

    – Only read the card while your card is upright versus only read the card when your card is reversed. If you lay the cards out in a fain, al cards are reversed right?
Can you help me understand these sentences? Thanks :)!

      Hi Myrthe,

Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed the article and the deck. There is always a message when the card is either upright or reversed. Either way, you always read “The Essence”. If the card is upright, you read the part called “The Invitation”. If the card is reversed, you read the part called “The medicine”.

I’m not sure what you mean by laying them out and only reading the reversed meanings … you only read the reversed meaning if the card is reversed … unless you are doing a specific type of card spread designed this way? I hope this helps. 🙂

      Blessed Be. <3
