My Kitty Crusade

As many of you know, I have a soft spot for animals … especially cats, and I seem to have acquired a whole colony of stray cats that I have been unsuccessful in finding homes for. Shelters are full, and many otherwise loving homes are afraid to take on another cost and another mouth to feed. I have decided to take on the responsibility of saving these cats myself, but I need some help, and I’m willing to give away some wonderful gifts to you in the process. One major step in finding the best solution for these animals is to get them all spayed/neutered and vaccinated so they pose no further threat.  According to my vet, many stray cats are becoming infected with rabies because there is a shortage of food and territory that these animals all compete for.  Stray cats fight with infected racoons and oppossums and become infected themselves.  Whatever you do, don’t approach (or let your children) a wild cat until you know the animal is not sick.  Because of the influx of unwanted cats in shelters, thousands of what might be wonderful pets are killed each year.  Many cat owners can’t afford the cost of having their pet spayed or neutered, which creates an even higher population of unwanted kittens.

If you’d like to look back in my blog and see how I found myself in this situation, please feel free.  Long story short, though, I’m sort-of trying to clean up someone else’s mess.  I have had 15 cats on my property this year, and it all started in April with the first litter of kittens.  One mother has had two litters of kittens herself resulting in a total of 9 homeless babies.  I have no idea where this cat came from, but apparently she had a litter under by neighbor’s porch last year.  The other mother cat was abandoned by her owners about a year ago, and she has had one litter of 4 homeless babies.  I have tried and tried to find homes for as many of them as possible.  Unfortantely, this has resulted in me keeping three myslef.  I now have 6 cats, a dog, a five year old, several fish and snails, and a husband.  I have done as much as I can, but it’s just not enough.  There are 9 cats still left outside that are trying to stay warm and find food where they can.  I give them food myself, but it has become a major cost to feed all of them.  They are too sweet to let die.  They are lives and should not be tossed aside.

So, why do I need your help?  Well, even after my wonderful vetrinarian (Thank you Webberville Vet Clinic!) has figured in as much of a discount as possible, I need to raise $800 to spay/neuter and vaccinate all 9 cats so that at least the problem does not multiply.  Of course, if you know of anyone who may be interested in a cat or kitten, please let me know.
