Anxiety from A Unique Shamanic Perspective

by Fawn, contributing writer for Angel Messenger

What if resistance to feeling fear is a root cause for anxiety?

Not the fear that propels me to move out of the way of a moving vehicle or stop at the edge of a cliff. I mean the fear and anxiety of a chronic or post trauma kind. It is still flight or fight in nature, it still feels like imminent death and torture, but is not life threatening when utilizing patience and an effective prayer technique in order to correct the imbalance.

Mother Theresa is quoted as saying, “I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”

Her philosophy is that to be FOR something is more powerful than being against something, and I have observed this to also be true with the healing of anxious and fearful emotions.  With patients, clients and within my own personal life, it has become apparent that releasing resistance to fearful emotions balances energy including body chemistry.

When gripped with the raw energy of fear, it’s difficult to see that the act of surrendering the inner self to every wave of emotion which triggers anxiety within the body mind and soul, and listening to what that emotion is trying to communicate, is actually a key to healing. Yet, to face fear and move through the waves of emotion as they sweep through you is actually healing.light-n-darkness-ocean-shamanic-article-300x225

Instead of suppressing the panic which comes on like a storm in body, mind and soul, when triggered by a life event, it’s possible to learn to press an inner pause button at the threshold of your resistance, and to change your inner perspective from one of helplessness to one of awareness that all anxiety is created by yourself in order to “protect” a ‘soul fragment’ – from ‘dying’.

By connecting to a positive Source of energy with intentional focus, you can move through the emotional intensity that is bringing you a clear message that you are imbalanced (chemically/biologically, psychologically, emotionally/spiritually,  . . . it’s all connected!) and you can take action to create peace and calm in your life once again. In essence, there is a technique which exists that guides you to face the emotion of fear, which was originally being avoided, and rather seek out what the lesson being offered is within the experience itself. Once you realize the lesson, you can embrace the experience and let it go with no further emotional charge.

Releasing resistance to fear is about transcending the highest waves of emotion that wash over the body

From death into life, dark into light, fear into love. The way to listen to what the body is trying to convey is to allow fearful emotions to wash through the body. How I do this is to visualize the anxiety as waves or a waterfall, channeling through me and then out of me, through my head and out my feet. I do not try to control the water, just to feel and allow it to pour through me.  As it washes out the residue and negativity, I humble myself to the experience of surrendering to whatever truth is revealed, and feel it all fully.

Thirty years ago while experiencing an “anxiety attack”, I was miraculously (spiritually) guided through a technique of anxiety relief  which worked for me to fully release all emotional charges from a current circumstance literally overnight and which also took me on a lifelong path toward healing. I was a young mother of 23 years old and my husband was having an affair with a younger woman, eighteen years old, who he proceeded to get pregnant. There came a moment  during that episode of my life when I had an anxiety attack at the thought of losing my identity as the lover, wife, mother and best friend of my husband. I felt like I was going to die any moment when the panic hit me, and I began to fall into a state of irrational fear. I felt helpless, my heart was beating out of control, and at the moment when I felt I was going to disintegrate, I began to practice exactly the technique I describe below. As I explain each step, I will expand a bit on the hows and whys of it all.

  1.    CONNECT TO SOURCE

When a sensation of anxiety and panic grips me, I will immediately recognize that I am being triggered by a circumstance and become aware of my body. My body may be struggling to focus on what is happening in the room around me, I may feel sweaty, have a speedy heart along with rapid breathing. My thoughts may or may not be active, but my chest feels tighter and there are waves of colors sweeping through me like electric currents shooting through my chest and stomach area.

A sense of wanting to protect myself overwhelms my entire body and I want to scream or cry. I am confused about what to do. It’s terrifying to feel this, and if not for the silent observer who I connect with, that part of me that is always observing outside myself, waiting for me to project my Being out to it, to become it, to look out from within it, I would feel very helpless.  But I have learned that if I allow this feeling  of fear to move through me, while connecting to my observer self, the ‘higher self’ – who is in turn connected to SOURCE – i.e. God, Angels, Spirit Guides and Power Animal Companions, then I will begin to understand the message anxiety is trying to convey.

To connect to Source, it is helpful to visualize while projecting myself outward to sense, “see” and feel SOURCE.  For example, as a teenager, I requested that GOD show himself so I knew how to connect with Him, and I was shown a very comforting Light – which I now always project out to and speak with directly from my heart / body while praying. It’s important that you have a personalized way of connecting to SOURCE so that you can project out and connect with a safe, trusted, positive energy at any time, most especially during times of high emotion and anxiety.

  1. GO WITHIN SOURCE

Your breath and your body sensations are a way for you to get in touch with the anxiety and to understand what is going on within and without. It often feels like a fear of  physical death during an anxiety “attack” and it’s essential that as you release and surrender the emotions to Source, that you feel safe and are able to visualize. Visualization of this Source you are connecting with, combined with the link-up you have made with your body, mind and soul, will assist Source to transform darkness and heaviness of the negative energies into light and positive energy.

Visualize that you have water pouring through you in waves or in waterfalls, and as this water moves through you
falls-silver-shamanic-article-300x168from head to toes, it is taking with it all of the fear and anger, giving it to Source. Source transforms every bit of it into light and love. Hold the image (prayer) as you feel, see and intend this to be so.

This is done while projecting yourself (visualizing/feeling/knowing yourself) to be within Source. So take these perceptions and bring them to SOURCE with you. Ask that these negative emotions be transformed into Light and positive vibrations. Dwell here for as long as it takes to see and know this is happening.

When I am working with anxiety energy, I see a Light, and there is a particular image and Spirit Guide who I work with. Your image may or may not be different, and you may or may not have a guide with you as you do this work. You can ask an Angel, God, a guide and/or a Power Animal to be with you or help you, as you connect to Source. Follow your intuitive guidance about who you want to connect to and make a decision to trust you are safe in the process.  Deciding to trust will immediately decrease anxiety.

  1. SURRENDER TO THE MESSAGE

While dwelling in protective Source energy, allow all emotions to sweep through you and listen to what Fear is telling you. A loss of people, situations and power represented by the personality ruled by ego, feels like a fear of death which presents itself as anxiety. Being aware that the opposite energy of fear is Love, begin to see how you cannot release this anxiety, anger and fear without first loving whatever it is that is being resisted.

The anxiety may be telling you that you are being pressured through guilt, obligation and threat of loss to give time to projects and people you don’t want to be giving to right now. As you dive into the fear within your safe space, you will see more clearly that your anxiety is asking you to release the hold you have on the personality you are struggling to be for others, and to reclaim your true self. The personality is controlled by ego energy and any threat to end this energy feels like “death”. So being aware that it’s time to transform this fearful (fear of death energy) into light and positive calm and peace, allow the emotions to move through you and to face the monster head on.

  1. RETRIEVE YOUR SOUL FRAGMENT

There are fragments of yourself (Shamanic perspectives refers to soul fragments as parts of us detached, which we often protect during difficult emotional times, to keep safe from pain and damage). This part of you (soul fragment) is triggered by the circumstance and so in order to protect yourself from experiencing the painful feeling being triggered, such as loss of identity (ego); rejection, betrayal, facing a trauma or any life altering event which creates changes in status, you resist the emotions. The resistance to the change creates fear, and ironically acknowledging the truth of what is being communicated through the anxiety is healing. So, resistance happens and anxiety, fear and anger prevail as symptoms.

During this communication process with the fragment self, it is possible to embrace the lesson which is happening.  I always say from my heart “I forgive you, I forgive me, I forgive us” until I feel a full release and genuine love. It all comes down to Love. Love what must be released in order to reclaim the lost soul fragment who fears the change. The soul fragment feels alone and unsupported, so within Source, your observer higher self with the help of your guides, God, Angels, and/or Power Animal medicine, can show this fragment, that you can be trusted to be there for it. The fragment will feel safe and begin to heal, by integrating back into your inner self. You cannot release what you resist unless you first have the ability to love what you must release. The key, the secret, the WAY to peace and calm, is to love what you are letting go of.

  1. SAY THANK YOU FROM YOUR HEART

Sit with the visualization in Source sending out love until you feel a shift toward peace. At that time send out a heartfelt genuine thank you to Source. Send out a heartfelt thank you to any antagonists who are in your life assisting you with learning boundaries and with facing anxiety. When you finally shift your focus out of Source, be aware that you remain always connected by an intentional thought, and can return to feel the connection at any time.

This technique can be practiced often and is useful to know how to navigate prior to having extreme anxiety so that a connection to Source is more easily accessible when it’s needed the most. Over time the knee jerk reaction to take a pill or to escape reality through substances will be replaced by the ability to do much of the emotional work independently.

Proper boundaries are a way to decrease the potential of higher anxiety times, meaning that you feel in control of your schedule and free time, and that you offer your free time to others from the priority base of your personal schedule and not the other way around. Creating inner self moments, when you can connect to Source by walking in nature, through poetry, “down” times of solitude and planned sanctuary times will greatly increase your sense of calm.

A healthy lifestyle which includes good nutrition, combined with the lower stimulation times, will assist to heal injured nerves. Pure water, proper vitamins, minerals and plenty of organic vegetables and fruits show YOU that self care is a priority, and any soul fragments which are missing will learn to trust that the self is a safe place to dwell. As this occurs, the anxiety level decreases over all. And when it does occur, the fragments which are calling out for help are listened to properly so healing can take place.

Today I am friends with the woman who is the mother of my daughter’s siblings, the one who got pregnant many years ago. We have shared holidays and exchanged stories with our mutual children, and I have no anger, animosity or anxiety at all surrounding our connection. I have observed that my miracle touched the lives of all concerned, and sent us on a path that would have turned out very different had I not learned from my anxiety “attack” that day. The beauty began on that night when I chose the path of least resistance, and now I am honored to share this technique with you.

May your journey be joyful!

May the light of your soul guide you and bless the work that you do

Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanon born poet, wrote in his piece about Joy and sorrow “…. the deeper that sorrow carves into your being the more joy you can contain…” to acknowledge and grieve a loss is part of healing- and sometimes a process that takes time, in incremental doses instead of all at once. By surrendering to the journey because it is more painful to fight “against the flow” this powerful yet simple act is what faith feels like. Trusting that the unknown outcome will be healing, wholeness and joyous- is an act of faith – especially while treading through a dark valley of loss and grief. The way out is often moving through, allowing waves to wash over until water is calm again~
