Holding Space Without Losing Yourself

Holding Space Without Losing Yourself

Kindness in Our Circles

by Rev. Sheri
Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

There is a kind of kindness that doesn’t fix.

It doesn’t rush in.
It doesn’t absorb.
It doesn’t disappear in order to prove it cares.

It simply stays.

Many of us — especially those who are sensitive, intuitive, or naturally empathetic — learned early that caring meant carrying.

If someone we love is hurting, we tense.
If a room feels heavy, we absorb it.
If conflict arises, we try to smooth it.

Over time, we begin to equate love with self-erasure.

But holding space is not the same as holding weight.

There is a way to remain present in our circles — at home, at work, in community — without losing ourselves in the process.

And that, too, is kindness.

Holding Space vs. Taking On

Holding space says:
“I see you.”
“I’m here.”
“Your experience matters.”

Taking on says:
“I must fix this.”
“This is now my burden.”
“If they aren’t okay, I can’t be okay.”

One builds connection.
The other builds exhaustion.

When we confuse the two, we slowly begin to vanish inside our own relationships.

Kindness does not require collapse.

Presence Is Enough

There is courage in simple presence.

Listening without solving.
Standing steady without amplifying.
Remaining kind without overextending.

Often, the most stabilizing person in a room is not the loudest or the most active — but the one who is regulated.

You do not have to absorb chaos to validate someone’s pain.

You do not have to escalate emotion to prove compassion.

Steadiness is a form of love.

When Compassion Meets Limits

Kindness can look like:

• Pausing before responding
• Saying, “I don’t have the capacity for this right now.”
• Leaving a conversation that is spiraling
• Not answering immediately
• Choosing not to engage in drama

These are not acts of coldness.

They are acts of sustainability.

When we remain within what is ours to carry, we are far more likely to show up again tomorrow.

Boundaries are not the opposite of kindness.

They are what make it possible.

The Circles We Move In

This week’s invitation is gentle awareness.

Notice the circles you inhabit:

Home.
Work.
Friendships.
Community spaces.
Even brief encounters with strangers.

In each one, you might quietly ask:

What is mine to hold?
What is not?
What is kind and sustainable here?

You are allowed to care without carrying more than is yours.

You are allowed to remain whole inside your circles.

A Small Symbol of Intention

Sometimes it helps to carry a reminder.

Not a reminder to do more —
but a reminder to remain steady.

Our simple Be Kind enamel pin was created as a quiet symbol of that intention.

Not perfection.
Not performance.

Just a small, tangible way to remember:

Kindness can be calm.
Kindness can have boundaries.
Kindness can include yourself.

Something to wear in the circles you move within.
Something to remind you that presence is enough.

(If it feels meaningful to you, you can find it in the shop. No pressure — just a gentle offering.)

Returning to Yourself

As this week unfolds, there is no scorecard.

No need to measure how well you showed up.

Any kindness offered — including the kindness of restraint — was enough.

You are not meant to disappear inside your relationships.

You are meant to remain whole within them.

And you are always allowed to return to yourself.

🤍
