Finding Light in the Darkest Room: A Sacred Reflection on Spiritual Sensitivity, Trauma, and Healing

Finding Light in the Darkest Room:
A Sacred Reflection on Spiritual Sensitivity, Trauma, and Healing

by Rev. Sheri
Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

⚠️ Content Note: This post includes experiences related to trauma, hospitalization, and spiritual awakening. Please read with care.

It took me a long time to find the courage to share this. But I believe our vulnerability can be sacred—
and that healing begins when we stop hiding the truth from one another.

Over the past year, I’ve been on a deep inner journey—
one rooted in grief, spiritual awakening, and the unraveling of wounds I didn’t expect to face.

After the loss of my beloved dog, Riley, and an experience that left me shaken to my core, I’ve quietly held a story I wasn’t sure the world could hold with the reverence it needed. But healing has a rhythm of its own.

This post is not just about what happened—
It’s about reclaiming my voice.
It’s about honoring what my soul knows to be true.
It’s about letting the light in, even when the room is dark.

I share this now not to point fingers, but to offer presence—to those who have felt spiritually misunderstood, emotionally dismissed, or silenced in the spaces that promised safety. If this story speaks to something in you, know that you’re not alone. Healing is rarely linear, but it always begins with truth.

After everything crumbled, I found myself in silence. No bright revelations. No instant peace. Just a room so dark it swallowed my voice. And yet, something sacred stirred within that space …

This is the story of what I found in that room—a story I haven’t shared publicly before.

It’s one of pain, confusion, and heartbreak—but also of resilience, spirit, and sacred transformation. For more than a year, I’ve carried it quietly—unsure if the world could hold it with the reverence, tenderness, and truth it deserves. But today, I’m sharing it—for those who need to know they’re not alone.

The day after I lost my beloved dog Riley, who was like a child to me, I was placed in a mental hospital.

It was Christmas Eve. My grief was raw, my spirit wide open. For about six months leading up to that moment, I had been experiencing a deep spiritual shift. I began sensing things more intensely—hearing thoughts that didn’t feel like mine, seeing colors in ways I didn’t fully understand, picking up on the energies of people around me. These weren’t entirely new for me—I’ve had spiritual experiences like this throughout my life—but they had grown stronger and more persistent. It became overwhelming at times, and I didn’t know how to make sense of it. Still, I knew in my soul it was real.

Out of love and fear, my husband made a decision he thought would bring me to safety. But instead, I was placed in a system that broke something sacred in me. When I arrived at the hospital, I was asked about my past, including the abuse I endured as a child. I told them I had trauma. I told them about my spiritual work. But once the doors closed, I was treated like a problem, not a person.

“Nothing about it felt like care. It felt like punishment.”

Despite being told I would not have to prior to arriving, I was forced to remove all my clothing while two female nurses watched. One of them held up a thin sheet in front of me, like that was supposed to make it better. But it didn’t. It didn’t protect me from the violation. It didn’t shield me from the window in the door—open to a busy hallway, and left uncovered in my case. At the time, I told myself it must be too high for anyone to see through. Later, I found out that wasn’t true. Another patient told me that staff had covered the window for her.

They forgot to do that for me.

Even now, the system insists that technically, nothing wrong occurred. That the law was followed.

But if the law allows this, then something in the law is deeply broken.

In every faith tradition, care for the vulnerable is sacred. And yet, in that faith-based institution, sacred protections were not just ignored—they were coerced away. Under the threat of force and through the misuse of power, what should have been a place of healing became a place of spiritual violation.

This isn’t just a personal wound—it is a collective moral and spiritual failing.

Even now, I question myself—was the window cover white Velcro, or was it a black screen? Did I see it, or did I just hope it was there? That’s what trauma does—it blurs the edges, but never the impact. I felt unsafe. And that’s what matters.

I understand that to some, this may not seem like a big deal. But to me—to someone with a history of trauma, to someone who holds spiritual protections sacred—it was more than uncomfortable. It was violating. It left lasting harm. And what happened wasn’t just wrong—it broke something sacred. It violated human dignity and, in my understanding, crossed legal and ethical lines.

“I felt stripped of everything—my safety, my voice, my sacred protections.”

I felt stripped of everything—my safety, my voice, my sacred protections. They even took my jewelry, items that had been blessed. Nothing about it felt like care. It felt like punishment.

And still… even in that place, something sacred reached through.

✨
“Even in that place, something sacred reached through.”

And yet… I was not alone.

In that moment—stripped of everything, my body trembling with fear and humiliation—I felt Her beside me. Mary, the Divine Mother, stood witness to what was happening. I could feel her sacred presence, fierce and protective, her righteous anger burning against the injustice unfolding before us.

She wasn’t silent. She wasn’t passive. And then, through the haze of my suffering, she turned my gaze.

There, atop the pile of my clothing, lay my violet underwear.

It was Mary who showed me this—who reminded me of the Violet Flame, the eternal symbol of spiritual transformation and protection. And in that moment, as my body shook and the last thread of my dignity seemed taken from me, I felt her voice rise within my soul:

“You will not die from this. You will be created by it.”

🔥
“You will not die from this. You will be created by it.”

That was the moment I chose to survive. To reclaim myself, even in the darkest place.

But survival didn’t mean the darkness lifted—it meant I faced it head-on.

I endured a great deal in that place, coming face to face with shadows I never expected. I felt like a prisoner there. And then I remembered—I wasn’t supposed to be. I had entered as a voluntary patient.

Other patients warned me: “If you ask to leave, they’ll threaten to keep you here indefinitely.” It didn’t make sense. Legally, I had been told I could leave at any time. That’s what they promised me during intake.

But when I found the courage to request my release, I was met with cold resistance. They told me that asking to leave would likely result in them keeping me indefinitely.

In that moment, I realized how quickly freedom can become captivity—how systems of power hold their walls in place not with justice, but with fear.

Later, when I got out, I tried to file a complaint about the unwarranted strip search. I was told the strip search had been optional. That I had a choice. But I hadn’t. And no one else I met inside had, either. I realized then that even in speaking out, the system is built to protect itself—not those it’s meant to help.

For over a year, I’ve felt frozen inside myself—partly from the trauma, partly from medication I haven’t been allowed to stop. I’ve struggled with shame, with silence, with the fear that people would call me “crazy” for what I’ve seen and felt. Maybe some still will—but I no longer carry that fear.

I know this:

I am not crazy.
I am spiritually sensitive.
I am a survivor.
And I am a witness to something that needs to be changed.

✨
“I am not crazy.
I am spiritually sensitive.
I am a survivor.
And I am a witness to something that needs to be changed.”

If you’ve been through something similar—if you’ve ever been dismissed, misunderstood, or silenced—I see you. You’re not alone. Your experiences are valid. Your healing matters. I don’t share this story for sympathy. I share it because I believe in the sacred power of truth. Because silence protects the wrong things. And because I still believe in light—even in the darkest rooms.

💭
“I believe in the sacred power of truth. Because silence protects the wrong things. And because I still believe in light—even in the darkest rooms.”

To anyone still finding their way through the dark, I offer this truth …
If you’ve experienced something similar, know this:

You are not crazy.
You are not weak.
You are a survivor of something that should never have happened.
And you are not alone.

We may not be able to change the system overnight. But we can refuse to be silent.
We can stand for those who have no voice.
And we can be the light that says, “This ends with me.”

Share your story. Support a survivor. Light a candle for the unseen. Be the voice that says, “Enough.”

Even in the darkest rooms, the light still exists. And sometimes, we are the ones called to carry it in.

Note:
I have chosen to share this story without naming specific institutions, out of respect for the process of accountability and the hope that those responsible will seek to do better. But know this—if that respect is not honored, if truth continues to be denied, I will speak more openly in the future.

Love and Blessings,

Rev. Sheri

🌸 A Note from Rev. Sheri

This experience—though deeply painful—helped shape something sacred that has already begun to blossom.

I’m honored to share that Compassion Kits for She have now officially launched. In partnership with the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing, these special kits are reaching women who are emerging from violence and trauma—women who, like me, know what it’s like to feel stripped of dignity and safety.

Each kit is a small offering of comfort and care: items like soap, a soft blanket, a journal, and a handwritten blessing. They are a reminder that even in our hardest moments, we are not alone. We are worthy of love, of healing, and of being held with compassion.

If this speaks to your heart, I invite you to learn more and support this project through Angel Messenger. Together, we can be a light for those still finding their way through the darkness.

If this resonates and you want to recognize your true intuitive signal without second-guessing or repeated readings, Understanding Intuitive Guidance walks you through it step-by-step.

I’ve lived this. Repeatedly. The mental health hospital admissions. Total abandonment. My abusive ex husband left me and took everything from me. He even took my family, our friends and the really hard one to swallow – he took our children. I still can’t believe this is real. It’s been 5.5 years since I’ve seen or spoken to them. To anyone from my life before. My mother died believing his lies. I wasn’t welcome at her funeral when she died 3 years ago. I watched through a live stream while my ex husband carried her coffin. No one believed me. No one saw his abuse or how he destroyed me. I was so alone. If I hadn’t begun to feel and know of Gods presence and all those guides who have loved and supported me through it – I wouldn’t be here. There’s so much trauma from my life yet nothing came close to the last 5 years. I couldn’t have imagined what I’ve been through. I don’t really have friends anymore – I don’t know how to find my new normal with so much grief that feels unending. But I’ve followed this page for a few years and your angel readings have helped me when I had no one else to speak to. So Thankyou for all you do. Thankyou for speaking on your hospital experience – those who know – know. I was lucky to escape from my admission. They listened to my ex while I was dismissed as crazy. The more you protest the crazier they away you are. It’s so unjust and so damaging. I really isn’t healthcare at all.

Belinda, my heart aches reading your words. I’m so deeply sorry for all that you’ve endured—the loss, the betrayal, the silencing. What you’ve carried is heartbreaking, and I want you to know with all my being: you are not alone in your truth or your grief.

What goes on in these places is awful, and so much of it is hidden. One of several ways they terrorized me was when I was told I was “voluntary,” but then once inside, I was threatened with being kept indefinitely. It was not healing—it was a systematic taking of safety and voice. Nothing about it felt like care.

I actually filed a formal complaint, and though the hospital’s “internal investigation” dismissed it, I’ve asked the state of Michigan to intervene. The only way I know to make this better is by not being silent. Speaking is how we reclaim the power they tried to take. Your courage in sharing here matters.

I also understand what you said about the trauma that comes after the hospital. It’s hard to put words to all of it, but it’s also hard to live a “normal” life now. People on the outside can’t always understand, but those of us who’ve been through it know.

Please remember—you are worthy. You are loved. You are not crazy. And you are not alone. God sees. The Divine stands with you. There will come a day when Truth will be fully known. Until then, we keep carrying light together, even when the world tries to dim it.

      With peace and blessings,
      Rev. Sheri 💜

I love you and thank you, Re, for sharing your powerful truth and voice. Yes, “silence protects the wrong things!” A couple of days ago, I learned someone so dear to me was sexually assaulted as a child. I felt how her safety and dignity were absolutely violated and stripped away. My heart breaks for this injustice, wherever and to whomever it occurs. I love you

Thank you so much for your beautiful words and for honoring both my truth and your loved one’s. I’m so sorry to hear what she endured, and I’m holding you both in my heart. Silence protects the wrong things, and it causes harm that echoes through time. People think children are easy to silence, but that silence grows up … and when we find our voices, it can be both a reckoning and a healing. Thank you for standing in the light with me. I love you, too. 💛
