Contemplation Time
Contemplation Time appears when life may have become a little too loud.
There may be people asking things of you, decisions waiting to be made, responsibilities competing for your attention, messages arriving, thoughts racing, and so much information coming at you that it has become difficult to hear what you actually think or feel.
This card offers a simple invitation:
Create some quiet.
Not because you need to disappear from your life, but because sometimes we need a little distance from the noise before we can see things clearly again.
You Don’t Have to Fill Every Quiet Space
We live in a world that makes it incredibly easy to avoid silence.
We can reach for our phones.
Turn on the television.
Scroll through social media.
Listen to a podcast.
Answer another message.
Find another task.
None of those things are inherently bad.
But when every quiet moment is immediately filled, we may never give ourselves enough space to notice what has been happening within us.
Contemplation doesn’t have to mean sitting perfectly still in formal meditation.
It might mean drinking your morning coffee without your phone.
Sitting outside for ten minutes.
Taking a quiet drive.
Writing in a journal.
Watching the rain.
Listening to birds.
Praying.
Walking somewhere peaceful.
Or simply sitting somewhere comfortable and allowing yourself to do absolutely nothing for a little while.
You May Need Time Before You Know
If you’re trying to make a decision, you may feel pressure to figure everything out immediately.
Sometimes an answer really does become clearer when we stop forcing it.
But contemplation isn’t about demanding an answer from yourself.
You can sit quietly and still not know.
That’s okay.
Perhaps you need more information.
Perhaps circumstances need time to unfold.
Perhaps you need to talk with someone.
Perhaps you aren’t ready to decide yet.
Or perhaps the answer is beginning to form, but you haven’t given yourself enough quiet to recognize it.
Not knowing is not failure.
Sometimes “I don’t know yet” is the most honest answer available.
Listen Without Forcing Meaning
Quiet can also create space for spiritual reflection.
You may want to bring a question into prayer and simply sit with it.
Ask the Divine for wisdom.
Ask your angels for support and guidance according to Divine will.
Then listen.
You don’t have to strain for a voice, sign, vision, or extraordinary experience.
You don’t have to turn every thought that enters your mind into a spiritual message.
Simply notice.
What thoughts keep returning?
What feelings arise?
What brings peace?
What creates tension?
What practical realities become clearer when you’re no longer surrounded by noise?
What do you know?
What don’t you know?
Sometimes guidance feels spiritual.
Sometimes clarity comes through reason.
And sometimes the most important realization is simply recognizing what needs your attention.
Nature Can Help Us Become Quiet
If possible, spend some time outside.
There is something wonderfully grounding about being somewhere that isn’t asking you to accomplish anything.
The trees don’t need an answer from you.
The sky doesn’t need you to finish your list.
The birds don’t care how productive you’ve been.
You can simply be there.
Notice the air.
Feel the sunlight or breeze.
Listen to the sounds around you.
Look closely at something growing.
Let your body settle into the moment you’re actually living instead of constantly racing toward the next one.
You don’t need a beautiful forest, beach, or mountaintop.
A porch, backyard, open window, houseplant, or patch of sunlight can be enough.
Rest Can Be Part of Discernment
Sometimes we try to make important decisions when we’re exhausted.
Everything can feel more overwhelming when we haven’t rested.
If you have been pushing yourself relentlessly, this card may not be asking you to think harder.
It may be asking you to rest first.
Eat something.
Sleep.
Take a break.
Let your nervous system settle.
Then return to the question.
Rest doesn’t magically solve every problem, but it can sometimes help us approach the problem with greater clarity.
Give Yourself Permission to Be Still
You do not have to solve your entire life today.
You don’t have to answer every question.
You don’t have to know exactly what comes next.
For a little while, you can simply stop.
Breathe.
Pray if you want to.
Listen.
Let yourself be quiet enough to notice what is already here.
And when you’re ready, return to the world carrying whatever clarity, peace, question, or next step you discovered there.
A Gentle Question to Consider
What might become clearer if you gave yourself a little quiet space without demanding that you immediately find an answer?
Love and Blessings,
Rev. Sheri

I notice that the mermaid in this card is sitting on land and no water is in sight, which reminds me very much of the Hanged Man card. I have had this card come up for me in times where things seem stagnant and I’m trying to force them to move but there is still something left to be considered, and really the Universe is keeping the situation still to provide me the time I need to think about it. It says that the answer is inside of me already, or that the angels are waiting right there with the answer, and that in order to get out of that stagnant, landlocked place there is some stillness and thought in order, not our immediate instinct in a world that demands action, action, action!
Katie,
Thank you for sharing and reminding us how important it is to sit in stillness.
Blessings to you!
I like this interpretation, thank you! It can feel a bit uncomfortable to be a “fish out of water”, too. I get this card a lot and have never thought about how she is completely out of the water. 🙂
