Rediscovering God: A Gentle Homecoming Beyond Labels

Rediscovering God:
A Gentle Homecoming Beyond Labels

A soft path back to God with breath prayer, boundaries, and a blessing—no labels, just love.
There are seasons when faith feels complicated—when the language we were given about God no longer holds the love we’ve come to know. If that’s you, breathe. You’re not broken. You’re not “falling away.” You might be coming home.
This isn’t an essay against anyone. It’s a hand on your shoulder. It’s for the tender‑hearted who love Christ and also need space from culture wars, fear‑based teaching, or pressure to perform. It’s for those who have met God in a quiet room, in the forest, in a hospital hallway—and wondered if that encounter “counted.”
What I mean by “coming home”
Coming home isn’t about attacking people; it’s about telling the truth in love—and letting go of what doesn’t bear the fruit of love. It’s noticing where institutions—Christian or otherwise—have missed the heart of the message and choosing a kinder, wider way. It’s the courage to release what wounds and keep what grows compassion.
What I’m keeping
I’m keeping Jesus’ core invitations: love God, love your neighbor, protect the vulnerable, tell the truth, practice mercy. I’m keeping wonder, prayer, compassion, and the fierce tenderness that makes room for the outcast and the overlooked. I’m keeping the living Presence that still meets us wherever love is real—whether or not we’re sitting in a pew.
What I’m releasing
I’m releasing fear as a tool of control, purity tests that shrink the table, and the idea that God only moves inside certain buildings or through certain titles. I’m releasing arguments that win the point but lose the person. I’m releasing shame disguised as “correction.”
If you’ve been hurt by religion
I’m so sorry. You deserved gentleness. If you’re rebuilding trust with God, go slowly. Let your nervous system come first. Let your body learn that prayer can be a safe place again.
Try this:
- Breath prayer: Inhale, God of Love… Exhale, be near.
- A truth check: “Does this teaching grow compassion in me?” If not, you don’t need it.
- A boundary: “I’m not available for spiritual conversations that dishonor my dignity or another’s.”
If you’re inside the church and aching too
Thank you for your faithfulness. Many of you are doing quiet, beautiful work—feeding, sheltering, listening, holding. Keep going. Please also keep the doors open for wanderers and the language gentle for the bruised. We need you.
Meeting God beyond the labels
I’ve met God while washing dishes, while holding a frightened hand, while sitting with angels and grief. I’ve met God in sacred music and in silence. Wherever love takes root, the Holy is already there. That means your kitchen table can be an altar. Your car can be a sanctuary. Your tears can be a prayer.
A few gentle “rules of the road”
- Choose fruit over fencing. If something deepens love, it’s worth keeping.
- Honor conscience. Let God be God in other people’s souls.
- Repair when harm happens. Apology is a sacrament of humility.
- Protect the vulnerable. Compassion is not “political”; it’s spiritual ethics.
- Keep wonder. Mystery is not the enemy of faith; it’s the doorway.
A blessing for your journey
May the Lion give you courage and the Mother mend your wounds.
May your hands protect the vulnerable and your voice defend the truth.
May you find yourself—again and again—where two hearts choose love.
And may you discover that God has been walking with you the whole way home.
