Bridge of Light Guidance: How Do I Protect My Peace Without Looking Away?

by Rev. Sheri Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

A Question from the Bridge

Dear Rev. Sheri,

I have been feeling overwhelmed by everything happening in the world. There is so much political division, war, suffering, extreme weather, financial hardship, and uncertainty about the future.

I want to remain informed and care about what is happening, but sometimes the news leaves me feeling frightened, angry, and helpless. Part of me wants to stop paying attention altogether, but that does not feel right either.

How can I protect my peace without turning away from the suffering of others? How do I remain a light when the world feels so dark?

Message from the Bridge:
You Are Held

In your sorrow, in your joy—you are held.
Invisible arms cradle you with endless compassion.

Dear One,

The Bridge begins with a reminder that may be difficult to feel when the world seems especially heavy:

You are held.

You are held as you witness the suffering around you. You are held when your heart aches for people you cannot reach. You are held in your anger over injustice, your grief over humanity’s choices, and your fear about what the future may bring.

You are also held in your moments of joy, rest, beauty, and hope.

You were never meant to hold the whole world alone.

Releasing Is Not the Same as Looking Away

Perhaps this card has come forward because you have been trying to carry more than a human heart and body can contain. Your compassion is sacred, but compassion was never intended to become an endless burden that crushes your spirit or leaves you too overwhelmed to act. Heaven is not asking you to stop caring. Heaven is asking you to remember that you are not the Creator. There are sorrows you are meant to witness. There are truths you are meant to speak. There are actions you are meant to take. But there are also burdens that must be lovingly placed into hands greater than your own. Let yourself be held as you release them.

“Creator, what is mine to do?”

It is difficult to witness so much suffering and not feel the weight of it. When we see people harmed by war, families struggling to afford necessities, communities divided by fear and hatred, children placed in danger, and the Earth responding to years of neglect, something within a compassionate heart cries out. We want to help. We want the suffering to stop. We want truth to matter, goodness to prevail, and those with power to remember the humanity of the people affected by their decisions. When these things do not happen quickly—or when events seem to move in the opposite direction—we may begin to feel helpless. We may carry worry, grief, anger, and fear into our bodies. We may even feel guilty when we experience moments of happiness because we know that someone else is suffering. But we cannot carry the entire world within our human hearts and bodies. Eventually, that weight will exhaust us, overwhelm us, or leave us feeling too powerless to do anything at all. Some of it must be released to Heaven. Releasing the weight of the world does not mean that we stop caring. It does not mean ignoring injustice, pretending everything is fine, or refusing to acknowledge suffering because it makes us uncomfortable. It means recognizing the difference between what we are being called to witness, what we are being called to do, and what we must entrust to the Creator. There are burdens that belong to us, and there are burdens that do not. You may be called to help one person, support one cause, speak one truth, or respond to one need. You are not called to personally solve every crisis occurring across the Earth.

You are not responsible for carrying the whole world.
You are responsible for tending the piece of the world that has been placed within your reach.

The Responsibility of Lightworkers

As lightworkers, we are not here to close our eyes to what is happening around us.

We are here to bear witness and serve as caretakers of this time. We are called to speak truth where lies have taken root, protect what is sacred, and help this world rise toward a new tomorrow.

We are here to become God’s hands and heart upon the Earth—not by trying to do everything, but by faithfully doing the work placed within our reach.

I know that calling can feel daunting.

Once, I was shown a beautiful and glorious tomorrow—a world shining with purpose, love, harmony, creativity, art, and all that is good and worthy.

That vision feels farther away now. Some of humanity’s choices have carried us down darker and more selfish paths, and those choices have consequences.

But the vision is not gone.

The path may have become longer. There may be more healing, awakening, and courageous truth-telling required of us before we arrive. Yet the light of that possible tomorrow still exists, calling us forward.

We are not meant to carry the suffering of the entire world within our bodies and hearts. But neither are we meant to turn away.

We must learn how to remain awake without being consumed—to witness what is happening, release to Heaven what is beyond our ability to hold, and then listen for the part that belongs to us.

When the Suffering Touches the Innocent

I want to be honest: I struggle with this too.

It is especially difficult for me to release what I am witnessing when innocent people are being harmed—particularly children.

There are times when suffering should disturb us. There are truths that must be spoken, even when speaking them is uncomfortable. Protecting our peace must never become an excuse to close our eyes, silence our conscience, or leave vulnerable people to suffer alone.

Sometimes we need to speak.

Sometimes we need to donate.

Sometimes we need to write or call a senator, sign a petition, support an organization doing meaningful work, or use our own platform to draw attention to what others would prefer to ignore.

Sometimes we need to pray—and sometimes our prayers must be followed by action.

There may even be moments when we are called to do everything within our power: speak the truth, contact those in authority, give what we can, encourage others to respond, and stand firmly beside those who need protection.

But eventually, we may reach the edge of what is ours to do.

When we have spoken, acted, prayed, and followed the guidance placed upon our hearts, there comes a time when we must release the outcome. This does not mean that the situation no longer matters. It means recognizing that it has moved beyond our hands.

We cannot continue carrying it inside our bodies as though our constant anguish will somehow protect the people we love or change what has already passed beyond our control.

At that point, we place the people, the circumstances, and the outcome into the care of the Creator. We ask Heaven to carry the work forward through hands other than our own.

This is one of the hardest forms of surrender: knowing that we have done what we could, accepting that we cannot control what happens next, and allowing ourselves to return to the life and responsibilities still before us.

Sometimes it is incredibly difficult to let go, especially when we know we are here to do light work and we can see darkness unfolding before us. Something within us wants to rush toward it, confront it, and keep fighting until everything has been made right.

But we are not here to fix everything all by ourselves.

We are here to contribute our light—not to become the only source of it. We are one part of a much greater movement of compassion, truth, courage, and Divine purpose. Our responsibility is to answer the call placed before us, do what is genuinely within our power, and trust that other hands, other hearts, and Heaven itself can continue the work beyond the limits of our reach.

We speak when it is time to speak.

We act when it is time to act.

When we have done all that is ours to do, we release with love—not because we have stopped caring, but because we trust that the Creator can continue working where our own reach ends.

Create One Ripple of Light

When the problems are enormous, a small act can feel insignificant.

It is easy to believe that holding a door open, helping one family, mailing one Compassion Kit, offering one prayer, or donating a few dollars cannot possibly matter when entire nations are struggling.

But light moves through the world in ways we cannot always see.

When I prepare a Compassion Kit, that act creates light within me. It places something tangible and loving into the hands of another person. The recipient is reminded that they are seen, that their dignity matters, and that someone cared enough to help.

That experience may change how they move through the rest of their day. Perhaps they will feel a little less alone. Perhaps the compassion they received will make it easier for them to extend kindness to someone else.

The light moves outward, touching one life and then another.

The same thing can happen when we hold a door for someone. That simple kindness may brighten a difficult moment. Perhaps that person will become a little more patient with the next person they meet. Perhaps that patience will prevent an argument, encourage a tired worker, or offer gentleness to someone who desperately needs it.

We may never know where the ripple travels.

Taking compassionate action adds light to our own lives, the life of the person receiving it, and the world surrounding us both. The light does not remain contained. It creates another ripple—and then another.

We do not need to see every result for our light to matter.

When we cannot erase the darkness, our work is to create more light—to push the darkness back and keep it at bay.

We may not be able to illuminate the entire world by ourselves, but we can tend the light entrusted to us. When enough of us do this together, the darkness cannot overtake everything.

Ways to Create More Light

On the world stage, we need an enormous amount of compassion, courage, truth, and kindness to heal the messes humanity has created.

One compassionate act cannot end a war, heal political division, stop environmental destruction, or feed every hungry person.

But imagine what can happen when millions of people create ripples of light.

Those ripples influence families, communities, institutions, governments, and future generations. They affect what we are willing to tolerate, what we choose to support, where resources flow, and how we treat one another.

    • Care for the Earth
Make choices that protect the living world entrusted to us.

None of us can do everything.
But all of us can do something.

Protecting Your Peace While Remaining Awake

Protecting your peace does not require you to become uninformed. It may require you to become more intentional about how you receive information.

You do not need to consume upsetting news throughout the entire day to prove that you care. You can choose trustworthy sources, learn what you need to know, discern whether action is being asked of you, and then step away.

Give yourself time to breathe, pray, rest, create, and reconnect with what is still good.

Allow beauty into your life.

Notice the sunrise. Listen to music. Make art. Laugh with someone you love. Sit beside a tree. Hold an animal. Receive a moment of joy without guilt.

Joy does not betray those who are suffering.

Joy restores the strength we need to continue serving.

When a particular story weighs heavily upon you, pause and ask:

  • Is there an action I can take?
  • Is there a truth I am being called to speak?
  • Is there someone I can help?
  • Have I already done what was within my power?
  • Is this still mine to carry, or is it time to place it into the hands of Heaven?

If action is possible, take the next compassionate step.

If you have already done what you can, offer your prayer and release the outcome with love.

The Creator can reach places you cannot. Heaven can hold what your human heart cannot contain.

The Tomorrow We Are Creating

Perhaps the beautiful tomorrow I once witnessed will not arrive as quickly as I hoped.

Perhaps humanity has taken detours that have made the journey longer and more painful.

Still, I believe that tomorrow remains possible.

Every time we choose truth over deception, compassion over indifference, courage over silence, and love over fear, we help bring it closer.

We are creating that future through the choices we make now.

We do not need to carry all of tomorrow today.

We need only create the light that is ours to create in this moment and trust that it will join with the light of others.

Together, those small lights become something greater.

Together, they become a bridge.

A Prayer for Releasing the Weight of the World

Creator of all that is,

I place into your loving hands the suffering I cannot heal, the conflicts I cannot resolve, and the future I cannot control.

Please hold every person who is frightened, grieving, hungry, displaced, persecuted, or alone. Bring comfort to those who are suffering, protection to those who are vulnerable, and compassion to those whose choices affect the lives of others.

Lift from my heart the weight that was never mine to carry alone.

Do not allow my helplessness to become indifference, nor my compassion to become despair.

Help me remain awake without being consumed.

Show me what is mine to do.

Guide my hands toward meaningful service, my voice toward truth, my choices toward compassion, and my heart toward love.

Give me the courage to act when action is required, the wisdom to recognize my human limitations, and the faith to release what is beyond me into your care.

When I have done all that I can, help me surrender the outcome without guilt. Continue the work through other hands, other hearts, and pathways I may never see.

May the light I offer today join with the light of others, creating ripples of kindness, healing, courage, justice, and peace throughout this world.

I release what I cannot carry into the loving care of Heaven, and I accept the small but sacred work that is within my reach.

May every act of compassion help guide this world toward the beautiful tomorrow that still awaits us.

I am safely held within your loving care.

Amen.

With peace, love & grace,

Rev. Sheri
