When Compassion Meets Cruelty: Why We Keep Writing

When Compassion Meets Cruelty:
Why We Keep Writing

I recently received a “response” from the White House after sending a heartfelt letter about the harm caused by the ongoing government shutdown.
What came back wasn’t a dialogue — it was a form letter filled with blame, distortion, and hostility. I’m sharing part of it here, not to invite argument, but because truth must be seen. Silence and denial are how darkness grows. When cruelty becomes normalized, compassion must speak.
“White House staff are still furloughed due to Democrats in Congress shutting down the Federal Government so they can give illegal aliens free healthcare and benefits…
The Democrats are so cruel in their continual votes to shut down the Government that they almost forced the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to cease operating…
If the Schumer Shutdown continues, the United States could lose $15 billion in gross domestic product per week—that is money stolen out of every American’s pocket—and many Americans will face losing their job…
Unlike the Democrats, President Trump will continue putting you first. Please know that he loves hearing from you, and he is still listening.”
The letter ends with a strange kind of manufactured warmth — the ruler assuring the people that he “loves hearing from you” even as his policies cause them harm. It felt eerily reminiscent of President Snow in The Hunger Games — polished civility masking calculated cruelty.
It’s a voice that justifies harm in the name of order, that calls compassion weakness and powerful propaganda righteousness. And it’s a voice we must never grow used to hearing from those entrusted to lead us.
The contrast between the words I sent — a prayer for mercy, truth, and leadership — and the words I received in return says everything about the moral divide we are living through.
🕊️ A Note on Truth
For clarity: the claim that “illegal aliens receive free healthcare and benefits” is not true. Undocumented individuals are not eligible for federal healthcare programs because they lack Social Security numbers and legal status.
Meanwhile, this shutdown — initiated by the Trump administration’s refusal to pass a bipartisan funding bill unless key healthcare provisions were dismantled — is removing healthcare and vital resources from millions of American citizens who rely on the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Medicaid. These are working families, veterans, children, and seniors — real people now caught in a political struggle that places ideology and power above human life.
❤️ A Note on Healthcare Access and Humanity
It’s important to understand what “healthcare” means in this conversation. Undocumented immigrants cannot receive federal healthcare benefits or insurance subsidies. They are not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, or Affordable Care Act coverage because they lack the required Social Security numbers and legal documentation.
However, hospitals are legally required to provide emergency treatment to anyone whose life is in danger, regardless of status or ability to pay. This care is not “free” — many patients receive large medical bills, and hospitals often absorb the financial loss.
Some community and faith-based clinics step in to offer help where they can, funded by donations and compassion rather than government programs. This isn’t about “handouts”; it’s about basic human decency — making sure no one is left to suffer or die because of paperwork or politics.
This is not leadership.
It is the erosion of conscience.
And yet, I share this not to spread anger, but awareness.
This is the tone that ordinary citizens are met with when they reach out in good faith. It reveals how deeply compassion has been dismissed — and why it must be restored.
That’s why Letters for the People exists: to help citizens speak light into darkness and bring humanity back into the heart of governance.
We cannot close our eyes to cruelty and still call ourselves compassionate. History has shown what happens when people look away.
So we keep writing.
We keep praying.
We keep believing that love, spoken boldly, can still heal a nation. 🕊️
