Stretching Into Stillness: A Christian Perspective on Yoga

Stretching Into Stillness:
A Christian Perspective on Yoga

by Rev. Sheri
Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

Over the years, I’ve received many heartfelt messages from people wrestling with whether practices like yoga are compatible with Christianity. Some believe yoga is evil or spiritually dangerous. Others, like myself, have found healing and connection through yoga, not separation from God. I want to speak to those in the middle of this conversation—to offer clarity, compassion, and context.

Personally, I do not believe yoga is evil. I have used yoga and chair yoga to relieve nerve and muscle pain, as well as to release trauma stored deep within my body. For me, yoga has been a tool of healing, never a path away from God. I hope this article offers helpful insight to those who seek truth without fear.

What Is Yoga, Really?

Yoga originated in ancient India as a spiritual discipline. Traditional yoga involved practices designed to unite body, mind, and spirit—often including postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), and meditation. These practices were rooted in Hindu philosophy and aimed at achieving spiritual insight or inner peace.

However, like many ancient systems of healing and self-awareness, yoga has evolved over time and been adapted across different cultures. Today, yoga is practiced in a wide variety of ways—some spiritual, some entirely secular.

In the West, many people experience yoga as a form of physical exercise or stress relief. Modern yoga classes often focus on breath awareness, gentle stretching, and relaxation techniques, without any connection to religious teachings. Some even integrate Christian faith—using Scripture, worship music, or prayer in place of traditional elements.

Like any tool, yoga is shaped by how it is used. For some, it’s a way to draw closer to God. For others, it’s simply a path to better health and emotional balance.

What Does the Bible Say About Yoga?

Here’s the truth: the Bible does not mention yoga.

It does, however, warn against worshipping other gods, practicing sorcery, and engaging in idolatry (see Deuteronomy 18:10-12; Galatians 5:20). These verses are often cited by those concerned about yoga, especially its roots in Eastern spirituality.

It’s also worth noting that the Bible was written in a vastly different cultural context—before Eastern practices like yoga were widely known in the West.

But if someone uses yoga solely for physical exercise or therapeutic healing—without invoking other deities or engaging in spiritual practices contrary to their faith—then these warnings may not apply.

In fact, 1 Timothy 4:8 reminds us, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

A Matter of Intention and Discernment

Many Christians find peace and healing through yoga by simply aligning their intention. That may mean:

  • Skipping any chanting or Sanskrit mantras
  • Replacing those words with Scripture or silent prayer
  • Dedicating the practice to God or Christ
  • Using the time for meditation on Biblical truths

Your body is a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19), and mindful movement can be an act of worship, not rebellion. God sees the heart.

When Healing Happens on the Mat

I was especially moved by the story of a Christian woman who, after suffering a stroke, turned to yoga as a way to reconnect with her body and her Creator. She wrote that yoga helped her quiet her mind and sense God as close as her own breath. For her, it wasn’t about foreign religion—it was about restoration.

Her story mirrors my own in many ways. In times of pain, I have turned to yoga and chair yoga to find comfort, healing, and stillness. It has supported my nervous system, helped me regulate emotions, and reconnected me to Divine peace. Not once did I feel led away from Christ. Quite the opposite.

What About Concerns from Other Believers?

The apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 14 that some practices are okay for one believer but not for another. We are not to judge each other on matters of personal conviction, especially when they don’t conflict with the love and grace of God.

If someone feels yoga leads them astray, they should avoid it. But if others find healing and closeness to God through it, we must respect that, too.

Final Thoughts: Faith, Freedom, and Healing

We are all on our own journeys with God. Yoga is not inherently evil. Like music, food, or art, it can be used to honor the Creator or to distract from Him. The choice lies in the heart and intention of the practitioner.

So if yoga helps you breathe more deeply, stretch without pain, or find a few moments of sacred stillness, know that you are not alone. And if you dedicate your practice to God, He will meet you there.

Let us walk gently with one another on the journey of faith—and trust that God knows our hearts.

With love and blessings,

Rev. Sheri

P.S. A Personal Note

While I was raised within Christian tradition and still honor the teachings of Jesus, I also resonate with what some call Christ Consciousness—a Divine presence of unconditional love and unity that has existed across time and can be awakened within us.

Jesus is a powerful embodiment of that consciousness, and His life continues to guide mine. I don’t follow every aspect of traditional doctrine, but I do walk a spiritual path rooted in compassion, healing, and connection with the Divine.

This article is written to speak to those navigating questions about yoga, faith, and fear—especially those who love Christ and are seeking clarity, healing, and truth.

If this resonates and you want to recognize your true intuitive signal without second-guessing or repeated readings, Understanding Intuitive Guidance walks you through it step-by-step.
