If You Don’t Know How to Be Kind to Yourself, Start Here

If You Don’t Know How to Be Kind to Yourself,
Start Here

Kindness Circle – Week One

by Rev. Sheri
Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

There are many people who are very good at being kind.

They show up for others.
They remember details.
They offer encouragement.
They give grace quickly.

And yet…

When it comes to themselves, the tone shifts.

The voice grows sharper.
The expectations grow heavier.
The patience grows thin.

If that feels familiar, I want to begin here:

This is not a flaw in you.
It is often a pattern you learned.

Many of us were taught — subtly or directly — that kindness toward ourselves was indulgent, selfish, or something to be earned after everything else was handled.

Some of us learned that staying hard on ourselves kept us productive.
Some learned it kept us humble.
Some learned it kept us safe.

So if self-kindness does not come naturally, it does not mean you are broken.

It may simply mean you were trained to survive before you were taught to soften.

What Self-Kindness Is — And Isn’t

Self-kindness is not abandoning responsibility.
It is not avoiding growth.
It is not pretending everything is fine.

And it is not just spa days and inspirational quotes — though those can be lovely forms of self-care.

A bath can soothe the body.
A reflection card can anchor the mind.
A small gift can remind you that you matter.

But self-kindness runs deeper than the moment.

It is the tone you use with yourself when no one is listening.
It is whether you allow yourself rest before collapse.
It is whether you respond to your own pain with curiosity instead of criticism.

It is quiet.

It is steady.

It is often invisible.

If You Don’t Know Where to Begin, Start Small

Not dramatically.
Not perfectly.

Just gently.

• Notice your inner voice for one day.
• When it turns harsh, soften one sentence.
• Drink water slowly instead of rushing.
• Step outside and feel the air on your face.
• Let one thing remain unfinished without self-punishment.
• Eat one meal without multitasking.
• Say “I am learning” instead of “I should already know.”

These are not grand gestures.

They are tiny rewrites of an old script.

Self-kindness is not about becoming someone new.

It is about becoming less cruel to the person you already are.

A Gentle Question for This Week

What would change if you stopped trying to earn your own compassion?

What if kindness toward yourself did not require perfection first?

What if it did not require exhaustion?

What if it was simply allowed?

Sit with that.

You do not have to solve it.
Just notice what rises.

A Simple 5-Day Gentle Practice (Optional)

If structure feels supportive, you might try this:

Day 1 – Awareness
Notice your inner tone. Write down one harsh sentence you catch.

Day 2 – Softening
Rewrite that sentence as you would say it to someone you love.

Day 3 – Physical Care
Do one small physical kindness (rest, stretch, warm tea, early bedtime).

Day 4 – Emotional Permission
Allow one feeling without correcting it.

Day 5 – Compassion Statement
Finish this sentence:
Even when I am ________, I am still worthy of kindness.

That’s it. No tracking. No performance.

Just gentle repetition.

As we move through this first week of our Kindness Circle, we begin inward — not because the world does not need compassion, but because sustainable kindness begins with a cared-for heart.

If tangible reminders help you anchor that intention, I created the Spring Blessing Box as a small seasonal companion — filled with simple comforts and reflective touches meant to support this very practice of gentleness.

Not as a solution.
Not as a fix.

But as a quiet reminder that you, too, are someone worth tending to.

You do not have to transform overnight.

You only have to begin noticing where you have been hard on yourself — and soften there.

Start there.

Warmly,
Rev. Sheri
