The Blessing of Giving: How Light Is Born From the Places We’ve Been
The Blessing of Giving:
How Light Is Born
From the Places We’ve Been

The Monday after Thanksgiving always feels like a quiet threshold — the soft space between gratitude and giving. It’s the moment when we shift from reflecting on the blessings in our lives to becoming a blessing in the lives of others.
And yet, for many of us, giving isn’t something we learned from abundance.
It’s something we learned from the places where we once had little … or nothing at all.
Giving as Healing
People often ask why I’m drawn to helping women, children, and families.
The truth is simple:
I give to the places where I once hurt.
When I was a young girl, I had to buy all my own period products beginning at the age of twelve. No child should ever have to navigate something so vulnerable and essential on their own. Years later, that memory became the seed of Compassion Kits for Her — a project born from the desire to ensure no young woman feels unseen, unprepared, or unworthy of basic care.
I give to low-income families because I know what it is to be low-income — not in theory, but in the lived, daily way that shapes how you breathe, plan, and hope.
I give to children because I remember how it felt to need protection, warmth, and tenderness.
Strangely — beautifully — every time I am able to give to someone in those same places of need, a piece of my own story heals a little more.
Giving doesn’t erase the past.
But it transforms it.
It restores something inside the heart that the world once tried to take.
The Light We Find in the Dark
There is a truth I have learned over and over again:
Sometimes the darkness we are forced into becomes the place we first discover our light.
This does not excuse what others have done.
It does not justify harm.
And it never means we were meant to suffer.
But it does mean we have the sacred choice to turn our pain into compassion — to transform our wounds into ways of helping others rise.
Today, families are struggling — and many don’t know where to turn. I shared more about this in my reflection on creating A Guide to Finding Help & Hope, which you can read here if you or someone you know needs support:

Women are trying to rebuild their lives after trauma.
Children are in need of comfort, safety, and belonging.
Low-income families are choosing between food and heat.
Shelter pets are waiting for something as simple as a toy to help them feel loved and less afraid.
And when we give — whether it’s time, kindness, prayers, shared resources, or financial support — something extraordinary happens:
We become the light we once needed.
Why Giving Matters Now More Than Ever
This season can be difficult for so many.
But giving isn’t about a date on a calendar — not even Giving Tuesday.
It’s about remembering that we are powerful vessels of love, hope, and healing.
When we give from the heart, even the smallest gesture becomes a blessing that ripples outward, touching lives we may never meet and healing pieces of our own spirit along the way.
A Blessing for Your Week
May your giving be guided by compassion.
May your generosity return to you as peace, clarity, and quiet joy.
May you discover that the light you offer to others is the same light that gently heals your own heart.
And may we continue, together, to build a world where no one is left in the dark.
If you feel called to support any of the compassion projects mentioned in this reflection — including kits for women, gifts for shelter pets, comfort for children, and assistance for low-income families — you can learn more or make a donation here:

Thank you for writing this article, I agree that it is my own suffering that led me to relate to the suffering of others and that is why although I have little to give I do what I can when I can, I was shy to put my first name and posted as J but now I will put Jenny. I have been using this website since 2010, and the free angel readings have been and continue to be very important to me. I am sorry you had a difficult childhood but like you say at least that difficulty led to compassion. <3
Jenny, thank you so much for your courage in sharing this. My heart truly goes out to you for the suffering you’ve walked through — and also for the incredible strength it takes to transform that pain into compassion for others. That is no small thing. It speaks to a very strong and very luminous soul. 💛
I’m deeply grateful that you’ve been part of this community for so many years, and that the angel readings have supported you along the way. It means more than I can say to know that something here has brought comfort into your life.
Please know that this is a space for you — a place where your tenderness, your resilience, and your growing light are welcome. The path of turning shadow into compassion is not an easy one, but it is sacred, and you are clearly walking it with grace.
If you feel you could use a bit of extra support right now, we do have several downloadable products that might be helpful. I would especially recommend the Summer of Self-Love Bundle, which is currently offered as a free gift here:

It includes gentle tools for rest, healing, and reconnecting with your own heart. I created it for souls like you who give so much and deserve nourishment, too — especially those of us who know what it feels like to give even when our own cup is not full.
May the angels continue to guide you, encourage you, and surround you with love as you keep healing and becoming.
🤍 With warmth and gratitude,
Rev. Sheri
