When You Feel Behind
Before the Week Has Even Begun

by Rev. Sheri Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

Somehow, Monday arrived before I was ready for it.

I realized this morning that I had forgotten to prepare today’s article. Last week, I also missed one of our Bridge of Light posts because I had spent the day with my mother and sister planning my niece’s baby shower.

There is a lot on my plate right now.

Along with my usual work, I have been creating church-window designs for a craft project my grandma is making. Last week, severe storms left my sister and niece without power, so they came to spend the day at my house. I was grateful that they had somewhere safe and comfortable to go, but it also meant unexpectedly losing a full day of work.

Some of what is filling my time is joyful. Some of it is difficult. Some of it arrives without warning. Much of it involves people I love and responsibilities I genuinely want to carry.

But even the things we lovingly choose still require something from us.

They take time, energy, thought, planning, and emotional space. When we are holding too many things at once, something may occasionally slip through the cracks—not because it was unimportant and not because we did not care, but simply because we are human.

Perhaps you have felt this way too.

You begin the week with unfinished tasks waiting for you. You remember the message you meant to answer, the appointment you meant to make, the bill you meant to pay, or the promise you made to yourself but could not quite keep.

Before Monday has even truly begun, you already feel behind.

That feeling can quickly become a harsh inner voice:

You should have remembered.

You should be more organized.

You should be able to handle all of this.

But perhaps the more compassionate truth is that you have been handling a great deal already.

We often notice the one thing that slipped while overlooking the many things we successfully carried. We see the unanswered message but forget the person we comforted. We see the unfinished work but not the family member we welcomed, the project we helped create, the meal we prepared, the problem we solved, or the difficult day we survived.

The forgotten thing becomes evidence against us, while everything we managed to do quietly disappears from view.

The Divine does not measure us this way.

Divine love does not stand over us with a checklist, disappointed that we did not complete everything perfectly and on time. The Divine sees the whole of our lives—the responsibilities no one else notices, the unexpected interruptions, the worries we carry silently, the physical and emotional limitations we work around, and the love behind so much of what we do.

Sometimes forgetting something is not a personal failure. Sometimes it is simply a sign that our minds and hearts have been carrying too much.

That does not mean our responsibilities no longer matter. It means we can return to them without punishing ourselves first.

We can take a breath.

We can offer ourselves the same understanding we would give someone we love.

We can tend to what needs our attention now and allow today to become a new beginning—even if that beginning happens later than we planned.

There is no sacred rule saying that a fresh start must happen at sunrise on Monday morning. Grace can meet us at noon. It can find us on Tuesday. It can reach us in the middle of an unfinished week, surrounded by clutter, forgotten plans, and an overflowing list.

We are still allowed to begin again.

So today, I am choosing not to see this forgotten article as proof that I am failing. I am allowing it to remind me that I am carrying a lot—and that I may need to hold some of it more gently.

If you are beginning this week already feeling behind, I hope you will offer yourself that same grace.

You are not lazy.

You are not careless.

You are not failing because something slipped through the cracks.

You may simply be a human being with too much on your plate, doing your best to care for the people and responsibilities entrusted to you.

Begin where you are. Tend to what you can. Release what cannot be carried today.

The week has not been lost.

You have not missed your chance.

Grace is still here, and you are still allowed to begin again.

If you are carrying more than you know how to hold right now, you do not have to carry it silently. You are welcome to share your needs on the Angel Messenger Prayer Wall, where your prayer can be held with compassion, love, and care.

May this week meet you gently. May you receive help where you need it, grace where something has slipped through the cracks, and the strength to begin again without shame.

With love and light,

Rev. Sheri
