How to Find Your Soul’s Purpose

by Rev. Sheri Spiritual teacher, writer, and founder of Angel Messenger

Have you ever wondered what you are here to do?

Maybe you’ve asked the Divine for a sign.

Maybe you’ve taken quizzes, pulled cards, prayed, meditated, journaled, or searched for some unmistakable answer that says:

This is your purpose. This is why you are here.

I understand why we want that answer.

We want our lives to matter.

We want to know that there is meaning behind our existence and that the gifts, experiences, hopes, and even struggles we’ve carried can somehow become part of something worthwhile.

But I wonder if we’ve made finding our soul’s purpose more complicated than it needs to be.

Perhaps your soul’s purpose isn’t one hidden thing you’re supposed to discover.

Perhaps it is something you spend your life becoming.

Your Purpose Is Bigger Than Your Job

One of the first things I think we need to let go of is the idea that our purpose must be a career.

Certainly, work can be part of our purpose.

Someone may feel deeply called to become a teacher, minister, nurse, artist, counselor, caregiver, advocate, or something else.

But your occupation and your soul’s purpose are not necessarily the same thing.

You might work somewhere simply because you need to pay your bills.

That doesn’t mean you’re living without purpose.

Your purpose may reveal itself in the way you treat the people you encounter there.

It may be expressed through the children you raise, the animals you care for, the people you encourage, the things you create, the causes you support, the relationships you nurture, or the kindness you bring into ordinary moments.

Purpose doesn’t need a job title.

Maybe We All Share One Purpose

I believe there is one purpose all of us share:

Love.

Love the Divine.

Love one another.

Learn to love ourselves.

Bring more compassion into the world.

What that looks like will be different for each of us.

One person may express love through caring for people who are sick.

Another may express it by raising a child.

Someone else may create beautiful things that bring people joy.

Another person may fight for people who aren’t being heard.

Someone may rescue animals.

Someone may feed people.

Someone may teach.

Someone may pray.

Someone may simply be the person who notices when another human being is struggling and asks, “Are you okay?”

These things may look very different from the outside.

At their heart, however, they can all become expressions of love.

Pay Attention to What Makes You Feel Alive

If you’re trying to understand your purpose, begin by paying attention.

What makes you feel alive?

What can you become completely absorbed in?

What do you find yourself wanting to learn more about?

What brings you a sense of meaning or fulfillment?

It doesn’t necessarily have to make you happy every moment.

Purposeful things can be difficult.

But there is often something underneath them that whispers:

This matters to me.

Pay attention to that.

Sometimes our purpose leaves clues in the things we cannot stop caring about.

Pay Attention to What Breaks Your Heart

Purpose isn’t only found in what brings us joy.

Sometimes it appears in what we cannot bear to ignore.

What breaks your heart?

Children going without food?

Animals being mistreated?

People feeling alone?

Domestic violence?

Homelessness?

Environmental destruction?

People being rejected because they’re different?

Someone struggling with grief?

A community that desperately needs something no one seems to be providing?

The things that stir compassion within you may tell you something about where your light is needed.

You don’t have to solve the entire problem.

Maybe you’re meant to help one person.

Maybe you’re meant to donate.

Volunteer.

Speak.

Create.

Teach.

Listen.

Advocate.

Pray.

Sometimes purpose begins with simply caring enough to do something.

Notice Your Natural Gifts

What comes naturally to you?

And don’t immediately dismiss your answer because it doesn’t seem important enough.

Maybe you’re a wonderful listener.

Maybe people trust you with things they don’t tell anyone else.

Maybe you organize chaos beautifully.

Maybe you’re creative.

Maybe you’re good with children.

Maybe you understand animals.

Maybe you can make almost anyone laugh.

Maybe you’re good at explaining complicated things.

Maybe you’re the person everyone calls when something goes wrong because you remain calm.

Maybe you cook.

Build.

Write.

Sing.

Repair things.

Grow things.

Comfort people.

Solve problems.

See possibilities other people miss.

Not every spiritual gift looks obviously spiritual.

The Divine can work through ordinary abilities too.

Ask What People Come to You For

Sometimes other people recognize our gifts before we do.

Think about what people consistently ask you for.

Advice?

Comfort?

Help organizing something?

Prayer?

A meal?

Creative ideas?

A listening ear?

Technical help?

A laugh when they’ve had a terrible day?

That doesn’t mean you’re obligated to give endlessly or become responsible for everyone else’s needs.

Boundaries still matter.

But patterns can tell us something.

If people repeatedly recognize a particular strength in you, perhaps it’s worth noticing.

Your Experiences Can Become Part of Your Purpose

Sometimes the things we’ve lived through shape what we eventually offer the world.

Someone who has experienced grief may become especially compassionate toward others who are grieving.

Someone who once needed help may later become passionate about helping others find resources.

Someone who knows what it feels like to be excluded may become the person who makes sure everyone has a seat at the table.

But I want to make an important distinction here.

I don’t believe we need to say that every painful thing happened because the Divine wanted to teach us a lesson or because our soul chose to suffer.

Terrible things can happen.

People can make harmful choices.

Life can be unfair.

We don’t have to call suffering a gift.

But sometimes, with time, we discover that something we learned while surviving can become something we use to help another person.

The pain itself wasn’t the purpose.

What we choose to do with what we learned can become part of it.

What Would You Care About If Nobody Applauded?

This can be an illuminating question:

What would I still care about if nobody ever applauded me for doing it?

Purpose doesn’t always receive recognition.

It doesn’t necessarily come with followers, awards, money, attention, or praise.

Some of the most meaningful things human beings do happen quietly.

No one sees the parent comforting a frightened child at two in the morning.

No one applauds the person who checks every day on an elderly neighbor.

There may be no audience when someone chooses patience instead of cruelty.

No one gives an award for being the friend who answers the phone.

Purpose isn’t measured by how many people notice.

Sometimes the most sacred work happens where almost nobody sees it.

You Are Allowed to Have More Than One Purpose

Your purpose can also change.

What mattered most to you at twenty may not be what calls to you at fifty.

There may be seasons when your primary purpose is raising your children.

Another season may be about caring for someone you love.

Another may involve building something.

Healing.

Teaching.

Creating.

Serving.

Resting.

Starting over.

You don’t have to identify one purpose and carry it unchanged for the rest of your life.

You are growing.

Your life is changing.

It makes sense that the ways you bring love into the world may change too.

You Haven’t Missed Your Purpose

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking:

But I still don’t know what mine is.

That’s okay.

You haven’t failed.

And you haven’t missed some secret doorway that everyone else somehow found.

You aren’t going to accidentally ruin your soul’s purpose because you chose the wrong college major, took the wrong job, moved to the wrong city, stayed somewhere longer than you wish you had, or haven’t figured everything out by a certain age.

You can change direction.

You can learn something new.

You can begin again.

You can discover a gift at 30, 50, 70, or 90.

As long as you are here, you are still becoming.

Ask the Divine

If you’re unsure of your next direction, bring the question into prayer.

You don’t necessarily need to ask:

What is my one great purpose?

Try asking:

Divine, where can I bring love today?

What gifts have You placed within me that I haven’t fully recognized?

What needs my attention?

Where can I be useful?

What am I being called to learn?

What am I being called to release?

What is the next right step?

Then pay attention.

The answer may not arrive as a booming voice from Heaven.

It may arrive as curiosity.

An opportunity.

A conversation.

An idea that refuses to leave you alone.

Something that moves your heart.

A door opening.

Or even a door closing that encourages you to look in another direction.

You don’t have to understand the entire journey to recognize the next step.

A Prayer for Finding Your Purpose

Divine, thank You for the life You have given me.

Help me recognize the gifts within me and use them with love.

Show me where my compassion is needed.

Help me notice the people, opportunities, and possibilities You place along my path.

Give me courage to follow the things that make my spirit come alive and wisdom to recognize when it is time to change direction.

Release me from the fear that I am behind, that I have missed my chance, or that my life must look impressive in order to have meaning.

Help me remember that small acts of love matter.

Guide me toward the places where my gifts can serve.

And when I cannot see the whole path ahead, give me enough light for the next step.

May my life become an expression of love, compassion, truth, and the Light of the Divine.

Bless it be. Amen.

Your Purpose May Already Be Happening

Maybe finding your soul’s purpose isn’t about discovering one enormous mission hidden somewhere in the future.

Maybe parts of it are already happening.

In the person you encouraged yesterday.

In the animal you cared for.

In the boundary you finally learned to set.

In the child you loved.

In the thing you created.

In the person you helped.

In the prayer you whispered.

In the moment you chose compassion when cruelty would have been easier.

And perhaps your purpose will continue unfolding for as long as you are here.

You don’t need to know the entire plan today.

Keep learning.

Keep creating.

Keep listening.

Keep loving.

Keep becoming.

Your purpose isn’t necessarily one destination you’re trying to reach.

It may be the light you leave along the path as you go.

Peace, love, and grace,

Rev. Sheri
