Reconnecting with Mother Earth

from our Angel Messenger Creative Team

The Earth is our true mother – she sustains us, nourishes us, protects us, and provides for us irrespective of how we treat her. She is truly the epitome of unconditional giving and eternal love. Somehow, a blind quest for “modernity” and an attitude of seeking convenience at all cost has led to the crisis in the natural world as we behold today.

Mother Earth and all her precious gifts are exploited for monetary profit. I get reminded of a Native American saying. “When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then, will we realize that one cannot eat money.”

How did we become so short-sighted? It’s like cutting the branch that we are sitting on. We think that we can conveniently dump poison in our rivers – not realizing that it is going to come back to us in the water we drink and bathe in.

In today’s times, we go shopping when we are bored and not when we really need something. Do all the material possessions we own really make our lives better? Most people feel overwhelmed by the number of possessions they have and they often don’t value what they have as almost everything these days is ‘disposable.’ This attitude reflects itself in everything we do and that includes the relationships we have with others.

It is important to start thinking beyond ‘discounts,’ ‘disposables,’ ‘cheap finds,’ and ‘latest buys.’ The real cost of the things you buy isn’t the monetary price you pay at checkout. You have to calculate the cost that was incurred while producing it. This means the environmental impact that was created when the raw materials were sourced from Mother Earth, the people who were involved in manufacturing the product and whether they received a fair pay or not – the kind of conditions they worked in.

If something comes to you at an insanely cheap price it means that someone else paid more heftily for it somewhere in the production cycle – that payment might have been in terms of their health, their wellbeing, their own resources.

You must also remember that every time you are consuming a product, you are utilizing something that was taken from Mother Earth. You have to ask yourself questions like how the production of that item impacted the health of the Earth. Did it involve dumping toxic waste in her rivers, polluting her air, poisoning the land?

How to Reconnect with Mother Earth

The Earth has the power to heal you – we come from the earth, we are sustained on it, and our physical body dissolves back into it. Hence, the earth is part of us as much as we are a part of her. In our ‘modern’ lives, we have severed our connection with Nature. When you reclaim your relationship with her, your body, mind, and soul automatically heal. You start finding a lot of real joy that springs from someplace deep inside – something that no amount of material riches can provide you with.

Here are a few suggestions on how to reconnect more deeply with Mother Earth.

Say No to Plastic

We consume products mindlessly – not thinking about the impact they have on our own health and on the health of the planet. I suggest that you become more mindful about your choices. Every time, you go to the grocery store and come back home with tons of items packaged in plastic, you are contributing to the planet’s waste problem by consuming and throwing away something that doesn’t biodegrade for hundreds and thousands of years.

Instead, buy less and try to buy package-free items as much as possible. You might want to read about the ‘zero waste’ lifestyle in order to become a more conscious consumer.

Buy Less – Enjoy What You Already Have More

Identify what your real needs are and say ‘No’ to mindless shopping. Not only will this save you time, energy and money, eventually you will also realize that it contributes immensely to your overall happiness.

We live in a society where we are made to believe that we must consume more in order to be happy. The problem is that this is a never-ending cycle. Every time, you buy a beautiful dress, there will be ten more beautiful dresses awaiting your attention. Also, think about the impact that every product you consume has on Mother Earth. When you start thinking like that, you will automatically want to consume less.

As much as possible, stick to buying sustainable fair-trade items. Of course, they will be expensive but they will usually also last much longer. Also, when you invest in something, you relish it more. Instead of falling for the lure of having more of everything, start thinking about having things you truly relish and that contribute positively to your life.

Follow the Cycles of Nature

Adjust your body’s biorhythm with the rhythms of nature. Wake up before sunrise, have lunch at noon, dinner at sunset, and go to bed by ten. This simple modification in your daily routine will completely transform the level of energy you feel throughout the day.

Spend Time in Nature

Every night and every morning practice a complete digital cut off. Switch off your phone, turn off your Wifi – and go out in nature to watch the stars. There is nothing more beautiful than stargazing. No matter how big you think your problems are, staring into the limitlessness of the night sky makes everything else seem insignificant.

Your heart becomes simply overwhelmed with the glory of the Universe. It makes you believe in something bigger and more magnificent than the limited human ego.

In the morning, walk bare feet in the park, take a walk on the beach, watch the sunrise – take the time to just ‘be.’ We often think that there is so much to do or achieve in this brief stint of human life. In reality, we are here to learn to just ‘be.’ Perform all your duties – do everything you must do but also remain mentally detached from the ups and downs of life. Watch them like you would watch waves in the ocean rise and dissolve back into the vast horizon.

Grow Your Own Food

This might not be for everyone but if you can, then certainly try this out. Not only will you be eating pesticide and chemical-free food but you will also get a chance to touch the earth and feel one with it. Any person who practices gardening will tell you that there is something deeply healing and calming about touching the Earth.

In conclusion, I would say live more consciously. Think about the everyday choices that you make as not only the decisions you make for yourself but also as something that deeply affects our beloved planet and the rest of humanity.

You might say how only your choices can create any significant difference in the world. Just remember, that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. We can either be part of the group that contributes to the problems or of the one that is working on finding and implementing solutions.

Each individual choice counts. Every time, you spend money or consume something, you are voting for the kind of world you want to live in. Hence, choose wisely!
