Powerful Mind and Body Connection

From a shamanic perspective, healing takes place when the soul reintegrates soul fragments back into self and awareness again. These missing pieces are commonly referred to as lost power, manifesting themselves in various dysfunctional forms, for instance as depression, rage, psychosis and disease. When these fragments are reintegrated back into the soul again, often a dramatic healing effect takes place. If you look deeper than the surface of any human situation, you may find that everything experienced is about returning to a state of balance and love. Taking this concept a step further, imagination is probably the most powerful healing tool we possess because fantasy is a combination of thoughts empowered by emotion. The power of belief is strong enough to create changes in our physical bodies even when we aren’t trying. In fact when a person intuitively knows something is true and there is no doubt otherwise, this faith alone will alter the chemistry of the body. In The Bible, Matthew 17:21, Jesus states,

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, it is enough. You can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Medical Doctor Andrew Weil shares a funny example of mind-body connection in his book, Health and Healing regarding the phenomenon of a placebo effect. His chapter is entitled ‘Why Warts Fall Off’, and in this chapter he describes a man covered with cutaneous warts: “One doctor told me he had once treated a man in his late fifties who had lived for years with cutaneous warts over most of his body. The standard methods of removing them had only multiplied their numbers. Finally, on a whim, the doctor told the patient he would try out a new, experimental form of radiation which was somewhat risky but so powerful that it might knock out the problem. He and a radiologist colleague had the man remove his clothes and stand in a darkened X-ray room. Then they made the machines hum loudly without actually emitting any X-rays. The next day, all of the warts fell off. They did not grow back. The doctor was impressed, but it never occurred to him to try to find out what went on in the patient’s mind-body or to consider the implications of what he had seen.

Another example of how powerful the mind is when it comes to transformation with feelings and thought comes from an account told by my Aunt Ellen, who is also a nurse. She told me of her experience: “An older wife of a terminally ill patient was told about his death. She was standing in the hospital hallway and after she heard the sad news said, ‘I can’t live without him’ and right before our eyes, fell to the floor with a heart attack, dying before we could save her.”

These examples of how powerful our mind is as related to healing of our bodies, offer insight into what can be accomplished with a committed dedication to meditative focus on aligning our thoughts and emotions with well being and good health. The discipline it takes to sit quietly and go within, to connect with Source and to align energetically with a desire to improve and heal – apparently pays off with positive results. Likewise, as shown through the extreme example of this woman whose heart stopped at the news of her husband’s death, damage can actually be done to ourselves through the alignment of fear and negative thoughts. This whole concept is food for thought!
