Ask Sheri – Moving Forward After Retirement

“I am newly retired from teaching and feel at loose ends. I am not sure what I want to do next. Right now, I seem to be focusing on my body and often feel overwhelmed and unhappy.  What should I do to move forward??   Thank you for your insight….Shelley”

Dear Shelley,

Feeling dissatisfied shortly after retirement is fairly common.  I’ve read that studies have shown about 20% of recent retirees become disillusioned after the initial excitement wears off, but I’m betting that number is on the rise.  Many people are being forced to retire or retire for the wrong reasons, leaving them feeling unfulfilled, frustrated or simply not ready.

One of the most common reasons retirees become dissatisfied with retirement is that they have nothing to retire to.  All of a sudden, you have all this free time on your hands.  With that time not being managed by a work schedule, you’ve got “idle hands”, and, for you, the focus of that dissatisfaction is pointing inward.  It’s possible you’ve gained a little weight, but that is also common after retirement, so don’t be too hard on yourself.  You’re kind-of in a rut.  Let’s focus on how to change that …

After retirement, it is very important to find ways to fill the holes left by your career.  Some of those holes might include status, a sense of fulfillment, time management, financial security, and even a social life.

For many, work is their social life.  Especially now that the school year is about to begin again, you will really begin to notice this difference.  Now is the time to be making new friends.  Connect socially – even Facebook is better than nothing.  Join social groups you are interested in … book clubs, gardening clubs, groups who go on trips together, etc.  Build a network of friends of all ages, old and new.

With nothing scheduled to take up your time, wasting time is natural, but it can lead to unhappiness and eventually even depression.  This is supposed to be the best part of your life, a chance to do everything you never had the chance to do.  Don’t waste it watching too much t.v. and spending hours online.  Make a Bucket List!  What things have you always wanted to do but never had the time?  Make a list of all those things you still want to do, and then start making plans.  Another good idea is to make a list of all the things that make you happy, and then do those things as often as you can.

If loss of status is bothering you, volunteering may be exactly what you need.  If financial security is a concern, now may the time to start a home-based business of your own.  For you, Shelley, you certainly have the qualifications to start your own tutoring business … or maybe you’d like to try something new.  Having your own business is a lot of work, but it might be perfect.  Service based business are also a great way to be social.  Or, maybe get a part-time job.  Of course, spending time with hobbies you once loved and later forgot about or didn’t have time for would be great fun, too!  And, maybe that’s even something you can turn into a business idea.

Shelley, this is meant to be the most wonderful part of your life.  You are free, and you can fill your time how you choose.  Take that focus off of yourself and put it into creating the life you want to be living.  Sit down and make that Bucket List.  Create a schedule for yourself.  Go for walks, and do things that will make you happy.  Connect with people, making old friends and new.  This is your time … Enjoy It!

Angel Blessings for a Wonderful Retirement,

Sheri
