Ask Sheri – Angel Cat

“Four years ago I adopted a rescue cat. He had been badly treated and I nursed him back to health. I slowly gained his trust and he became an affectionate loving companion. He seemed to sense when anyone in the family was feeling ill or low and would stay near that person and nestle into them as if trying to give comfort. It was an endearing trait and we jokingly called him our angel-cat. Recently, he became very ill and after trying many expensive treatments the vet advised that we have him put to sleep. It broke my heart to see him suffering so we went ahead. What I would like to know is will his soul go on and will he understand that I did everything I could to help him and that I loved him? I am so upset that he might feel I let him down. Thank you.”   – Christine

Dear Christine,

My heart goes out to you, and I completely understand exactly what you are going through.  I lost my “angel cat” almost two years ago, and I miss her still.  She was only six years old and became suddenly ill.  We tried expensive treatments and would have done more, if it wouldn’t have been cruel to submit her to more.  Like you, we had to do what was best for her, but that doesn’t make it any less painful.  Even now, tears are stinging my eyes just thinking about it.

I will tell you that your angel does know you did everything you could for him.  You rescued him, saved him from a bad situation and gave him a life and love he had never experienced before.  I don’t know what happened to him before you adopted him, but I have a sense that he would have died much sooner without you, and he knows this.  He’s with you, too.  Most people do not realize this, but pets can stay with their owners after they leave their physical bodies.  Sometimes, they go to the afterlife to be with those they love there, but you are his human.  It’s not the same as being Earth bound, like a lost spirit.  This is a good thing.  You are his Heaven.  You are here, so he is here.  He still loves and watches over you, like an extra guardian angel.  There was no mistake in calling him your angel cat!

You didn’t let him down.  You loved him, and that’s what he needed.  You loved him enough to release him from a body that didn’t work any more.  It would have happened, even if you hadn’t made the decision.  You simply saved him from more pain.  I wish so much for your heart to heal.  Pets are family and very much a part of our lives.  Their loss can sometimes hurt even more than losing a human family member.  Give yourself some time to grieve for him, but please know that he hasn’t left you.  He’s where he wants to be.

Wishing you healing, love and peace,
